Book Arts Guild of Central Florida
Description
The Book Arts Guild of Central Florida, a Central Florida-based community group of book arts enthusiasts, sought a logo to promote the Guild and its events. It also wanted to transfer all the content from its previous website to a new Squarespace one with a fresh design and reorganized content.
My idea phase involved sketching and jotting down ideas and concepts, as well as reminders of what to include in the logo presentation. Ideas included incorporating stacks of books, a folded zine, a bookbinding technique or tool, and an overall handmade feeling. Next came experimenting with some of the sketches and ideas in Illustrator. Although I tested a guild shield, open pages of a book, and different tools, the zine approach with a linocut font stood out.
I created versions of the logo that could be used in horizontal as well as vertical and square applications. I also developed two patterns that could be used as backgrounds: one that emphasized different stitching along book spines and another that showcased an accordion book fold. The color palette I chose echoed a popular letterpress poster for the Guild.
I assembled all these elements in a presentation, which includes font suggestions and mockups of how the logo can be used most effectively. The scraps of colored construction paper underscore the handmade feel.
The Guild approved the logo and began incorporating it into its promotional materials in September 2023. Once the Guild approved the new logo and branding guidelines, I applied it to the new Squarespace website, which went live in January 2024.
